Based on a discussion about American journals, why not start with a list of subcategories? Feel free to add as needed.

Are there decent journals for work on Australia, Canada, or cross-regional work on the industrialized world besides the Big 3? Where do World Politics, CP and CPS rank on your reading list? Which do you pick up first thing when it comes in the mail? How do APSR, AJPS and JOP match up in terms of comparative work?
If you had a decent European piece, would you send it to European Union Politics, European Journal of Political Research, or Journal of Common Market Studies first? It seems like none of them are narrowly EU-focused anymore. IS EJPR only for Europe-based scholars?
What about formal-quant comparative? Would comparative be ready to accept it, not as a sub-subfield, but as a category at least?
Tough question on Europe. EJPR is broader than the other two, which remain mostly EU-focused. EUP is newer but more rigorous. JCMS is widely read among EU folks. I think that in an American department either EJPR or JCMS would be best, the former because it's broader and at least a known quantity, the latter because it is actually (surpsiginly, to me) quite a "high impact" journal (in terms of cites, etc.) within economics.
I'm in the early stages of a project using Australia and New Zealand as cases. Obviously, I'd like to get it in one of the Big 3, or WP, CP, CPS, but if it doesn't turn out to be that important, could I send it to an Asian journal? Are the ANZAC countries and the Pacific islands under the purview of the Asian comparative journals?
I tend to disagree with 6:38 PM. I think that among American-based Europeanists EUP is more highly regarded (already) than JCMS. So I would say EJPR>EUP>JCMS. However, this may vary depending on the type of work you're doing.
For Europeanists, the Journal of European Public Policy (JEPP) has become quite important (much more than JCMS, I would say).
Strongly disagree, 9:24. JEPP is getting better, but I don't know of a single US-based scholar who thinks of it as anything other than a place to dump a bad paper.
I agree with EJPR>EUP>JCMS. Where would you put The Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties (JEPOP) for comparative behavior? Especially vis-a-vis CPS and Political Behavior?
For comparative behavior, I generally rank:
1-{APSR, AJPS, JOP, BJPS}
2-{CPS}
3-{Political Behavior}
But don't know where to put EJPR, JEPOP, EUP, PRQ, POQ, etc. What about non-European political behavior (with lots of stats)?
What about Electoral Studies? Too institutional?
JEPOP strikes me as being high-quality, but it's relatively new as a comparative journal (it was previously the British Parties & Elections Review--a good journal then, but with a narrow focus obviously).
I don't think it would rate very highly right now, but I expect it will climb a lot over the next few years as its audience grows.
What about Party Politics? Where does it stand?
There is some really interesting stuff in Party Politics (as well as some work that isn't so great) so if I saw that someone had published an article there I would have favorable expectations initially. But then, it's an area I'm interested in. If you work on parties I think it's normal you would find PP to be a useful outlet for reaching a core group of your intended audience. (I haven't actually published there myself; just an interested reader.)
I view Electoral Studies similarly. I have heard that the review process is way too slow, though.
Both Electoral Studies and BJPS are pretty slow.
Electoral Studies is really slow. My experience with BJPS has been good (fast rejects!)--on the order of 6wks-3mons.
Electoral Studies is horribly slow. I had a piece sit there for 10 months without getting any reviews back. Thank God I am tenured and I didn't need that pub (in the end my piece got published, after getting little or no feedback from the reviewers).
ES is terrible. I am late with a review for them (only a week late) but have been later in the past without any reminders. I am not claiming that I am not to blame for my actions, but the journals that have been nagging me since the due date get their reviews first. The one piece I submitted there took over 6 months. The comments were good (it was a reject) so I have no qualms about the decision. But I won't ever send another piece there again.
Are there any decent CPE journals beyond the "big 6"? AJPS publishes a lot of CPS work, or has recently. I don't specialize in CPE, but couldn't think of a CPE-specialty journal offhand.

There are regional outlets for comparative work within the region, and my impression is that Asian journals view Australasia / South Pacific as outside their zone. Possible outlets if you don't make it into the big 6: Aust JPS, the pretentiously-named "Political Science" from NZPSA, a journal from the University of French Polynesia in both French and English, and maybe something published out of U of South Pacific or the East-West Center at U of Hawaii.
What do people think of Economics and Politics as a CPE journal? On the one hand, they appear to publish pretty good articles by a wide range of respected authors. On the other, neither my grad. school nor the two institutions I've taught at carry the journal in their libraries, and it's not on Jstor, meaning it's hard to find.

What's a good Africa journal? I have a grad. student developing an article that probably won't make CP or CPS.
